Heliodons mimic the earth in space. They match the angle between a flat surface (called the deck) and a beam of bright light to the angle between a site on earth and the solar beam. The match must account for the site's latitude, the time of day, and the date. Once the match is properly made, any object on the deck (such as a model building) looks in the light of the heliodon as it would look in the sun at the site.
The Sun Angles heliodon uses the sun itself as its light. You act as the moving earth by turning the deck in the sun to guide the shadow of a pointer across a horizontal sundial diagram. You can see how any object on the deck would look in the sun at whatever latitude, time, and date you are mimicking with the sundial.
With the angle of incidence dial you can also gauge the intensity of the direct sun on any model surface.
Our Sunangles Heliodon Kit will show you how incredibly inexpensive it is to explore solar energy our easy way.
